Reading English words or writing their spellings can take considerable effort. Start by understanding the difficulty and finding ways to make learning more accessible.
Dyslexia involves persistent difficulties with reading and spelling. Needs vary between learners. Difficulty with English alone does not establish dyslexia; explore learning needs with school staff and qualified professionals.
NCCHD: dyslexia informationPhonics teaches letter–sound connections, blending for reading and segmenting for spelling. It supports part of literacy learning alongside vocabulary, oral language and comprehension.
A Cochrane review of English-speaking struggling readers found benefits for some word-reading outcomes. Spelling and comprehension effects were less certain; the studies concerned English-speaking readers, rather than Japanese EFL learners.

Neither was a randomized comparison, so changes cannot be attributed to Jolly Phonics alone. These studies do not establish equal or guaranteed effects for all learners with diagnosed dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia seminar · Organised by Nagoya City Moriyama Library
Atsuko presented teaching approaches and classroom examples for supporting children who find reading and writing in English difficult. The seminar took place in Moriyama Library’s second-floor meeting room.

Atsuko led a session on exploring different ways to enjoy reading and supporting people with dyslexia, drawing on English-learning experiences. The focus was understanding individual literacy needs and opening up ways to enjoy books.

Jolly Study Square shares Jolly Phonics teaching approaches with teachers and parents.
Our existing website describes intensive sessions for children with a dyslexia diagnosis, training for teachers and parents, and an online introduction to Jolly Phonics. Please contact us to discuss training or teaching support.
In addition to her work at I's English School, Atsuko Maruyama teaches English to children with dyslexia and other developmental or learning difficulties. She also gives talks at the request of schools and education organizations.
