『ジョリーフォニックス・フォークテイルズ・リーダーズ』は、世界中の伝統的な民話を再構成したものです。語彙は極めて慎重に選定されており、ジョリーフォニックスを用いて読み書きを学んでいる生徒のために特別に設計されています。
 
この「レッド・レベル・ブック」の本文では、デコード可能な規則的な単語（ジョリー・フォニックスの第1段階で教えられる42の文字音から構成される単語）のみと、ごく少数の「トリッキー・ワード」（この段階では完全にデコードできないが頻繁に使われる単語）のみが使用されています。
 
新たに登場するトリッキー・ワードや、代替の母音の綴り方はすべて、表紙の内側に記載されています。これらは、本を読み始める前の簡単な練習課題として活用できます。
 
「lamb」の「b」のように、発音されない文字には薄い文字が使用されています。
 
本の最後には、理解度確認の質問やディスカッションのトピックが掲載されています。これらにより、生徒たちは本文を読むだけでなく、その意味を理解できるようになります。
 
 
Jolly Phonics Folktales Readers are retellings of traditional folktales from around the world. They have a very carefully controlled vocabulary and are specifically designed for students who are learning to read and write with Jolly Phonics. The text in these Red Level Books (first level) uses only decodable regular words (words that are made up from the 42 letter sounds taught in the first stage of Jolly Phonics) and a small number of tricky words (frequently used words that are not fully decodable at this stage).
 
All new tricky words and alternative vowel spellings used are shown on the front inside cover. These can be used as a quick practice activity before starting the book. Faint type is used for silent letters, like the ‹b› in lamb.
 
Comprehension questions and discussion topics are included at the end of the book. These ensure that students are not only able to read the text, but also get meaning from it.
