『ジョリーフォニックス・フォークテイルズ・リーダーズ』は、世界中の伝統的な民話を再構成したものです。語彙は極めて慎重に選定されており、ジョリーフォニックスを用いて読み書きを学んでいる生徒のために特別に設計されています。
 
このパープル・レベルの書籍の本文では、これまでに学習した文字と音の知識、すなわち42の主要な文字の音と、主要な代替的な文字・音の綴り（「happy」の『y』、「hop-over ‹e›」による長母音の綴り、 「day」の‹ay›、「seat」の‹ea›、「fly」や「high」の‹y›および‹igh›、「low」や「now」の‹ow›、「dew」の‹ew›、「joy」の‹oy›、「bird」や「turn」の‹ir›および‹ur›、「al」、 ‹au›、および「talk」「pause」「saw」の「aw」のような母音、centやgeneの「c」や「g」のような軟音、phonicsの「ph」、そしてhair、pear、careの「air」「ear」「are」のような発音）、および少数のトリッキーワード（この段階では完全に解読できない頻出単語）が含まれています。
 
新たに登場する「トリッキーワード」や、代替の母音の綴り方はすべて、表紙の内側に記載されています。これらは、本書を読み始める前の簡単な練習課題として活用できます。
 
「lamb」の‹b›のように、発音されない文字には薄い文字が使用されています。
 
本書の最後には、理解度確認の質問やディスカッションのトピックが掲載されています。これらにより、生徒たちはテキストを読むだけでなく、その意味を理解できるようになります。
 
 
Jolly Phonics Folktales Readers are retellings of traditional folktales from around the world. They have a very carefully controlled vocabulary and are specifically designed for students who are learning to read and write with Jolly Phonics. The text in these Purple Level Books (fifth level) uses only decodable regular words that use the letter-sound knowledge taught so far: the 42 main letter sounds and the main alternative letter-sound spellings (‹y› as in happy, the ‘hop-over ‹e›’ spellings of the long vowel sounds, ‹ay› as in day, ‹ea› as in seat, ‹y› and ‹igh› as in fly and high, ‹ow› as in low and now, ‹ew› as in dew, ‹oy› as in joy, ‹ir› and ‹ur› as in bird and turn, ‹al›, ‹au›, and ‹aw› as in talk, pause, and saw, soft ‹c› and soft ‹g› as in cent and gene, ‹ph› as in phonics, and ‹air›, ‹ear›, and ‹are› as in hair, pear, and care), and a small number of tricky words (frequently used words that are not fully decodable at this stage).
 
All new tricky words and alternative vowel spellings used are shown on the front inside cover. These can be used as a quick practice activity before starting the book. Faint type is used for silent letters, like the ‹b› in lamb.
 
Comprehension questions and discussion topics are included at the end of the book. These ensure that students are not only able to read the text, but also get meaning from it.
